Free food, music and downtown restaurant specials are all a part of First Fridays in downtown Warsaw.

The community is invited beginning June 4 to come to downtown Warsaw to enjoy the event that will be held on the First Fridays of each month until winter. Each Friday will have a theme.

The first event in Warsaw is 5 to 8 p.m. June 4. The theme is "Taste of Downtown Warsaw."

"First Fridays is an ongoing event that brings a festive atmosphere to downtown Warsaw," said Keith Reinholt, event organizer.

Reinholt came up with the idea for bringing the event to Warsaw.

The event is similar to one held in Goshen which also offers activities downtown the first Friday of each month.

"The whole idea of this is to bring people to downtown Warsaw by working together with businesses," Reinholt said.

He has been working for the past five weeks with a committee to plan First Fridays.

Organizers for the event include Warsaw Community Development Corporation and Warsaw Merchants Association.

Highlighting the June 4 event will be live music performances on the north side of the Kosciusko County Courthouse square. Local musician Nick Stanton will perform at 6 p.m. and local bands Sock Monkeys will perform at 7 p.m. and Fair Fjola will perform at 8:30 p.m.

Reinholt describes the Sock Monkeys as an upbeat band.

He said Fair Fjola is an Americana and indie-sounding band with a blend of pop, folk and rock.

There are other musicians planned to perform as well as jugglers and clowns.

People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Downtown stores will have small signs with discounted food price specials, and there will be artists doing street art.

There will be free cotton candy, popcorn, chocolate chip cookies and balloons.

Other activities planned include cornhole and a remote broadcast by Pulse FM. People will be able to register for free tickets to this years Pulse Festival in South Bend.

A free Zumba exercise class will be offered at Giverny Fitness from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Also during First Fridays there will be boxes set up in stores where people can provide input on what future events they would like to have at First Fridays.

Warsaw Community Public Library will show a free movie, "Julie & Julia" at 5:30 p.m.
