The Warsaw Fire Department was given four houses, three on Center Street and one on Market Street, by St. Anne's Episcopal Church for training.
A section of Market Street, between Columbia and Pine, will be closed Saturday, and residents are asked to avoid driving through that area between 2 and 4 p.m.
According to Carol Bianchini, St. Anne's facilities manager, the church is still deciding what to do with the land but knows the houses on that land are abandoned and unlivable.
Along with the houses, Warsaw Fire Department Chief of Training Rob Barker arranged for Jeff Shupe, Cleveland Fire Department, and Dave Karns, Columbus Fire Department, to conduct the training.
"I'd taken a class in Indianapolis instructed by Mr. Shupe," said Barker, "and decided to bring him up here."
Barker said he already planned on having Shupe and Karns come to Warsaw before the houses became available.
The concept of Shupe's training is "Big City Techniques For Small Town Departments."
Barker used the example of the Retired Tigers Complex as an example of the difference between a fire in Cleveland and one in Warsaw.
"(Retired Tigers) is a four-story building. In Cleveland, it'd be one department with different precincts working together. Here, we'd have different departments helping us."
Barker said the point of the training is to get Warsaw and other fire departments working better together.
Barker said every firemen at Warsaw will go through the training, and that it has been offered to other departments.
But with many of the other firemen around the county being volunteers they also have full-time jobs.
Firemen have been doing both classroom and field training since Wednesday with Thursday, today and Saturday being full days.
Firemen spend the mornings at the Pike Lake training center, and the afternoons at the abandoned homes.
Barker did advise, however, that those interested in seeing the firemen and their demonstrations are encouraged to watch.
The training will take place at 428 W. Center Street, adjacent to St. Anne's.[[In-content Ad]]
