Firefighter Monument to be Dedicated

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Staff Report-

PLYMOUTH – A dedication ceremony is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at the site of a monument erected in Marshall County in memory of five firefighters who died in the line of duty.
On July 31, 1982, five Plymouth firefighters were killed when their tanker truck rolled over while rounding on a curve on Ind. 17 South near the old West Township School.
Many Plymouth residents remember that day well. But many new and younger members of the community – and the area – have no knowledge of the accident and the effect it had on the community.
The only symbols honoring those men were five wooden crosses on the utility pole where they died. Over the years, the crosses fell into disrepair and were continually falling down. This past summer, the crosses were replaced with powder-coated steel crosses which should last a long time.
In addition, a monument has been placed on the southwest corner of the old school property. The monument displays the faces of the firefighters on the front, a brief summary of the accident on one side and the firefighter’s prayer on the other.
The dedication ceremony will take place at the corner of Ind. 17 and Sycamore Road. Senator Joe Donnelly is planning to attend. Governor Mike Pence is writing a letter, and representatives for Senator Dan Coats and Congresswoman Jackie Walorski will be present to read statements from them.
The public is invited to attend.[[In-content Ad]]
