Fire & Ice Festival This Weekend
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
This event is sponsored by the Columbia City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Beginning Saturday morning, 12 to 15 ice carvers from three states will take part in carving more than 50 blocks of ice. Many of the blocks, purchased by countywide businesses and organizations, will be carved on the courthouse lawn beginning at 8 a.m. Some of the blocks will be carved in front of the businesses to greet customers at their location.
There are several other activities planned for downtown Saturday.
A Fire & Ice Market will be held in The Center, corner of Market and Chauncey, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with many Whitley County crafters selling their specialties. The YMCA also will host crafts and children's activities at The Center during those same hours.
Dairy Queen will host an ice-cream-eating contest in the warming tent on the courthouse square. This contest will be for all ages, with age divisions, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Sunday brings possibly 15 or more carvers to compete in a four-hour carving competition from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the courthouse. The competition pieces are the carver's choice, with an "The Arts" theme. Besides judging for cash prizes, there also will be a People's Choice Award for the carvers in Sunday's competition. An area near the gazebo will be set up to vote for your choice.[[In-content Ad]]Another event is Sunday. The Senior Citizens organization is planning a chili cook-off competition at The Center across the street from the police station. The committee is looking for anyone that has "the best" chili recipe they want to cook up and share with the community during the festival. Anyone who prefers to taste instead of cook will get their chance to help judge for the People's Choice Award for chili after noon Sunday. There will be cash prizes for the chili categories. For more information on the chili cook-off, call Charlie Brindley at 260-691-3580.
Local vendors will be available with a variety of food and drinks for purchase this weekend near the courthouse square.
Watch for a picture area to take your picture with an Eskimo made of ice. The face will be cut out so you can stand behind and be the Eskimo.
For animal lovers who take their dogs to special events, the Humane Society will have picture taking next to their "Ice Fire Hydrant" too.
