County Auditor Sue Ann Mitchell sent a press release today indicating she received notice from Gov. Mitch Daniels' office that auditors' offices throughout the state should accept exemptions for 2007-pay-2008 property tax exemptions until Oct. 15.
The previous deadline to file for the exemptions was June 10. The extension will allow additional property tax relief for property owners who could qualify for the exemptions, but had not previously filed.
The exemptions and credits included in the extension are:
n Mortgage - Applicant must have a recorded mortgage as of March 1, 2007. Reduces assessed value by $3,000.
n Homestead Credit - Property must be the permanent residence of the applicant as evidenced by where the property owner votes, files income taxes and purchases car plates. Homestead Credit reduces assessed value by $45,000 or half of the assessed value if less than $90,000 in addition to providing a percentage off the taxes due.
n Over 65 - The applicant must be over 65 years old with an adjusted gross income less than $25,000 and an assessed value of less than $182,430. The exemption reduces assessed value by $12,490.
n Blind/Disabled - The applicant must provide proof of blindness or disability through a Social Security disability award letter or a letter from a physician. The property owner's taxable income must be less than $17,000. Reduces assessed value by $12,490.
n Totally Disabled Veteran- Applicant must provide proof of disability Form 20-5455. Assessed value of real and personal property of less than $143,160. Reduces assessed value by $12,490.
n Partially Disabled Veteran- Applicant must provide proof of disability Form 20-5455. There is no limit on assessed value. Reduces assessed value by $24,960.
n Solar Energy, Windpower, Hydroelectric, Geothermal - Information reference type of systems must be provided. Reduces assessed value by the amount of the assessment for the system.
The governor's action requires ratification by the General Assembly on their organization day in November for the order to take effect. The auditor's office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Taxpayers who have already filed for exemptions do not need to apply a second time. Forms that were filed in the auditor's office after the original June 10 deadline will be processed as timely filed as long as the property was owned by the applicant on March 1, 2007.
