As Memorial Day has passed, it once again reminds me of what it means to be an American.

Indiana is full of such men and women who have given their time and even their lives to serve our Nation. After losing my husband in the Iraq war, I became more keenly aware of the sacrifices our military endures to ensure our freedom.

The Field of Honor is just one way to show our gratitude for the men and women in our armed forces. This living display of heroism will serve as a patriotic tribute to the strength and unity of Americans and will honor all who are currently serving, those who have served, and the men and women who have made the supreme sacrifice for our nation's security and freedom.

The Field of Honor is a way for our community to show all of our veterans that we are proud and we support them. Community members can purchase a 3x5 flag for $25 that will be flown in honor or remembrance of a special soldier past or present close to their heart. The flags will be flown together in rows so that everyone may walks through in order to pay their respects to each solider. After the flags are flown, the donors can either take them home or allow us to donate them to a school classroom in honor of the soldier.

Each year the display becomes more meaningful to me. May we as a community never forget the sacrifice these men and women have made for us. The flags will be raised on July 2nd on the Akron Elementary School grounds and will be flown until July 25.

All proceeds going to the Nick Patterson Memorial Fund and The Wounded Warrior Project. Through the Nick Patterson Memorial Fund, we have been able to send many deserving kids on half to full rides to athletic sports camps such as Norte Dame, Lancer Basketball Camp, Purdue, and many others. Please sponsor an American flag in honor of our brave soldiers. To sponsor a flag, you may write to the address below. Checks can be payable to Field Of Honor and sent c/o Jim Saner at 201 Saner Drive, Akron, IN 46910. Thank you for your support of our brave warriors.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
