Fiddling

Editor, Times-Union:

With all the, "fluff and stuff" you have to put up with I wonder when you have time to get around to the, "basics" that really matter to to us (or should) and to the rest of our mixed-up world that you so often write. But thanks for putting up with us. The fellow who really "took exceptions" to most of the good, sensible things you wrote about 3 weeks ago just displayed his own lack of good sense; or so it seemed to me. (Often we take up good space with trivialities!) Or maybe "a lot of rot" would be more accurate for some things you let pass. We readers - and espcially us who like to "sound off" in letters to you, should not be surprised to see half of of our "stuff" cut at times! (But that would take too much time and work too).

History has it that the Roman Emperor, Nero, once, "Fiddled while Rome burned" once.

May I admit to you that some of "stuff" we write to, "The Editor" can remind one of the, "fiddling" of Nero at times? Most of us try to be "civil" enough not to call peope names when we disagree with them. We try to, "think and let think."

Back to Nero & Rome:

For instance, I take seriously the news we hear daily. Much of it reminds me of Nero's "Fiddling..." Especially when we hear that we have murdered more than 50 million babies since, "Roe v Wade" days. "Abortion?" That has to be, "The world's most expensive method of birth control." Yes, any way you want to figure it!

It also causes me pain of heart that we can bravely attack the evils and waste of tobacco use and not say a word about the use of alcoholic drinks that chalks up many times more waste in human lives and billions of dollars. Could millions of us be "blind in just one eye"? Did someone say, God is a God of judgment and integrity?

Another thing: We've all heard of people who have, 'a welfare mentality'. Right? Then what sort of "mentality" is it when we Americans think we can, spend our way into solvency and prosperity? I was 7 years old when the, "depression" of 1929 hit. And I remember how our family of thirteen ( 2 parents and 11 children) had to budget our dollars to stay solvent. But we did it. And, we all weren't afraid of work either. (In 1933 I went with my Dad 25 miles to buy a new Ford for our big family. It cost $350. (A lot back then).

What sort of "mentality" does a nation have who will mortgage ourselves, children and grand-children to borrow from China to try to keep up our reckless spending habits?

My Dad and mother never had any college degrees after their names, but they were smart, educated, made a good living for the family, taught us the Bible by precept and example, and all eleven of us voluntarity followed them in their good, solid Christian faith. (I was not the youngest, but I was the last one of the 11 to, "make my decision" for "the Kingdom" and became a Methodist "Preacher" as they said back then.
