Sandy came ashore Oct. 29 and its wake has left a line of not only devastated properties along the East Coast, but also devastated lives.
Eric Lane, Fellowship Missions founder and executive director, said the group is looking forward to assisting with the relief efforts. They leave Wednesday, and return Nov. 12.
Fellowship Missions was founded in May 2010 when it opened the first official homeless shelter in Kosciusko County.
“Part of our vision for the success of the homeless shelters in Warsaw has been to teach the residents to serve others first and give them opportunities like these to do so,” Lane said.
Lane said a way to serve is to enlist the residents of the shelter by providing relief aid to the hurting in other communities.
In summer 2010, Lane lead a group of shelter residents to Mississippi for Hurricane Katrina rebuild efforts.
This past spring, Lane and a group of residents worked in Salyersville, Ky., after the tornado outbreak.
Now Lane is organizing a trip where he is taking seven of the homeless shelter residents, along with other volunteers, to the Bayonne, N.J., and Staten Island, N.Y., areas.
Fellowship Missions has partnered with a Pennsylvania missions organization that has contacts with churches and pastors in that area.
Fellowship Missions also has partnered with Midwest Food Bank, Indianapolis, who will provide food and supplies.
Midwest Food Bank Director John Whitaker will send at least two semi-tractors trailers full of food and cleaning supplies to Staten Island where Lane and his crew from Fellowship Missions will travel along with the trailers and arrive Thursday.
Lane is inviting others in the Warsaw area to join the team and make the five-day trip or to provide supplies and donations to help meet the needs of people who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Financial donations may be sent to www.fellowshipmissions.net or P.O. Box 382, Winona Lake, IN 46590.
To donate work gloves and work boots for residents who are going out to serve, contact [email protected]
To donate winter clothing, including foot and hand warmers, contact [email protected]
