Let's go back a few generations from Dr. Remington's nostalgic, well-put letter on Warsaw and its growing pains.
In 1926, my dad moved his five children just off of Lake Street (on Perry) into a nice big house - population about 5,000 then.
We could ride our bike down Lake or any other street. Traffic was very light and would even pull over for us. You could walk around Center Lake, fish from the banks most anywhere. Now it is mostly private along the lakes.
Now Lake Street is a congested race track. I call its crossing of Fort Wayne Street Kamikaze Corners. Big accident there some day - needs a stoplight bad.
Back from World War II I found the town growing fast - too fast. More problems, more and more people. Progress is coming! Watch out! A few people make big money selling land. Building monstrous houses, etc.
On Center Street east of the tracks I sit 12 cars back of the tracks. Sometimes also waiting for a mile long trains, plus the stoplight. They talk more progress?!
You can't widen Lake or Center streets. OK, let's get Menards in here and then stop!
Stop! And think! It means more taxes, more police, more sewage problems, street problems, etc. Just to save a guy from driving a short ways to Menards in Goshen and, well, a few others I guess.
P.S. City council, let's get a stoplight up at Lake and Fort Wayne streets.
