Fair Queen

I read the letter about our newly crowned Fair Queen and would like to respond.
I am a co-director and would like to explain the rules and why this could happen. Our county pageant for over 50 years used the State Fair rules so there are no problems for our girls when they go to compete at that level of competition. Within the terms and conditions of the Indiana State Fair Pageant rule #2 states, “each contestant must be an Indiana resident, U.S. citizen and represent their home county. One of the contestant’s parents or legal guardians must also be an Indiana resident. The only exception: the contestant may reside in an adjoining Indiana county if the majority of their activities are in the county in which they enter the contest. Should a fair represent more than one county, the winning contestant must reside in one of the participating counties.” A complete set of rules is available from the Entertainment & Events Office at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Second of all, our active community member is correct, she does not live in this county, but her mother has taught at Wawasee School Corp. for 26 years and this is how she became very involved in our community. Here are a list of her activities and community services she has participated in over the years within our community:
Wawasee Ski Club member for 17+ years
- assists other members in learning to ski
- assists in supervision of younger ski club members
Volunteer work (participated in for many years unless noted)
- Tutoring math (2006-present)
- Packed and moved classrooms for WMS building renovation (2011)
- Helped print shirts for PRIDE program at WMS (2011/12)
- Operation Christmas Child
- Incentive items for Warrior Econ Day raffle at WMS
- Clothing for needy students
- Shoes and coats for needy students
- Backpack with school supplies for students in need
- Relay for Life
- Food Drive
- Ruth Marner Fundraiser (2012)
Yes, she did participate in sports at Manchester High School and is now attending University of Indianapolis, but I thought considering all the community service work she does in our county that would count for more than any sport activity.
I guess maybe if you think that I was not doing my job then I guess my priorities are a little different.
It is sad that this young girl’s grandmother has to hear about her granddaughter being spoken about in the newspaper. I think that this could have been taken care of in a different way instead of such a public forum. We are dealing with young women who really don’t need this type of negative attention.
Also, I really appreciate all of the attention that our pageant is getting, but it would be nice if next time it would be positive input and financial support. All the young ladies really work hard and would really like to be able to earn more scholarship money. I seriously hope this clears matters up for our community and we all come together and welcome her here. Any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact me anytime.
