Though today marks the opening of the 97th annual Kosciusko County Fair, gates opened yesterday with lights, sirens and a lot of action.
Fire trucks from several agencies in the county lead the long community parade down Winona Avenue and into the fairgrounds Sunday starting at 4 p.m., just as the demolition derby was making its return at the grandstands.
Heralded by the horns and sirens of the lead vehicles, 121 driving and walking units made their way down the road and through the gates, right under a huge American flag suspended between Winona Lake and Pierceton ladder trucks.
Fair highlights this week include the Salute to Heroes program tonight at 6:30 p.m., followed by Susie McEntire in concert at 8 p.m. The event will also feature special guests and a flyover of antique planes.
Love and Theft, with guest Casey James, will play at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the grandstands, and the Pop Evil concert Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Freestyle Motocross will hold an exhibition Thursday at the grandstands at 8 p.m., and stock truck pulls will be held at the stands Friday at 7 p.m. Truck and tractor pulls will be held at the grandstands Saturday at 11 a.m., on the closing day of the fair.
General admission for most grandstand events is $10.
Other special events this week include Science Central in the event center all day Tuesday, and Silly Safaris in the center that day at 2 and 4 p.m.; and the circus will come to the event center Friday at 5 p.m.
The hot dog eating and pie baking contests both return for the third year Saturday. Registration for hot dog eating starts at 2 p.m. in the event center, half an hour before the contest starts and an hour before judging for the pie contest.
The fair also features free ongoing entertainment on the ground, such as Galaxy Girl and Cyber Cycle Tuesday through Saturday in the Shrine parking area – and carnival rides and games, with special $1 pricing Tuesday for kiddie rides starting at 2 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
