NORTH MANCHESTER - The newest member of the Manchester Community School Board is no stranger to North Manchester or education.

Tuesday night, Jan Fahs was selected unanimously as the board replacement for Thom Frantz, who left the position to move to another state. Five people interviewed for the position in a public hearing Monday night at Maple Park Educational Center.

A student of Manchester Community Schools beginning in the first grade at Thomas Marshall Elementary School, Fahs has been a North Manchester area resident since 1964. Since 1996, she has been an associate professor of accounting at Manchester College and currently is the chair of the accounting and business departments as well.

Fahs took the oath of office during the Tuesday meeting and took her seat on the board immediately.

Fahs and her husband Andy Brown have four children: Celeste Brown, 21; Nina Brown, 17; and David and Matthew Fahs-Brown, both 10.

"I have twins in the third grade (at Manchester Elementary) ... (and I have been) impressed with the teachers, principals and other specialists."

Oftentimes, Fahs said, the schools are working with diminishing funds, and "that may be where I can use my expertise to help out in the schools."

In other business, the board:

• Approved the hiring of Laura Mooneyan as assistant director-musical at Manchester High School and Darla Eberly as Manchester Junior High cheerleading coach.

• Accepted the resignation of Tammie McNeeley as secretary/treasurer at Manchester Elementary School.

• Approved a professional leave request for Terry McKee to attend the Indiana Music Education's Association Convention Jan. 12-14 in Indianapolis.

• Approved a request for the cast of the musical "The King and I" to perform Jan. 22 at 2 and 7 p.m.

• Approved overnight educational field trip requests for Marilyn Mason to take the advanced choir students to Chicago to participate in the All-Midwest Choir and participate in the Thanksgiving Day parade Nov. 22-24; and Michael Schlitt to take the Academic Competitions team to Windsor, Canada, to participate in the 15th annual Canadian-American Security Councils Conference Dec. 1-3.

• Received a copy of the 2006-07 school calendar for review. The calendar looks much like the calendars of the past. Calendars will be available to the public for review. The board will discuss and vote on the calendar at a later meeting.

• Heard a presentation about the pilot year of the Student Assistance Program with the Bowen Center. Last year, 63 Manchester students in grades K-12 participated in the program. "It was a pretty successful pilot year," said Tim Nussbaum, corporate services director for the Bowen Center.

Board members are: Sally Krouse, president; Carlye McLaughlin, Steve Flack, Brian Schilling, and Kent Terrill. Todd Speicher was absent Tuesday evening. Superintendent is Dr. Diana Showalter. [[In-content Ad]]
