At Triton, it’s not a matter of “hoping” to win.
“Every year we have the expectation to play for a state title,” said Groves. “We expect to win every time we step on the court. We want to win the conference title, and the Bi-County Tournament, and there’s a lot of good competition this year.
“You hear a lot of college coaches say winning a conference title is hard, and that’s true. You know the teams you play, year-in, year-out and you know what they want to do, and they know what you want to do.
“The (Northern State) conference title race will be an especially tough race this year because it’s the last time we’ll play for it. We know every team wants to win the last title, and so every team is going to bring its ‘A’ game every single night, and we have to be ready to do the same if we want that title. It’s going to be very exiciting.”
The Trojans will likely start three seniors – Joey Corder, Austin Sellers and Skyler Reichart, along with juniors Jordan Andersen and Masen Yeo. Seniors Landon Kaufman and Spencer Glingle, juniors Jarrett Kreft and Dalton Bailey, with sophomores Grant Johnson and Nate Fleenor will round out the squad.
“Austin, Joey and Skyler all bring two-to-three years varsity experience into this year,” said Groves. “Jordan and Masen have a lot of experience at the varsity level, too. The other guys have played a lot of junior varsity ball, practiced against our varsity and worked hard in the offseason to be ready to contribute this year.”
Looking at scores from past games, Triton has played some up-tempo games with scores in the 80s and some half court battles with scores ranging from the 40s to the 60s. So what’sthe forecast for this year’s team?
“It depends on the kind of game our opponent plays,” said Groves. “We can go up-tempo at times, and we can work in a half court game when we need to.
“We’ve got a lot of good guys in our program who are very athletic, and we have a lot of length inside. In fact, we’re more athletic this year than we’ve been in the past, so we should be able to adapt to whatever game we need to play to win.”
The Trojans, who were 12-8 overall and 5-2 in the NSC last year, open the season Nov. 26 with a trip to Oregon-Davis.[[In-content Ad]]
