This time of year it's very hard to say good-bye to the many students that step into our lives for a 10-month time. They bring with them a strong desire to learn about our culture and experience living with an American family.
These families that open their home to these students, is who I want to say a big thank you to. We have so many diverse backgrounds of families, emptynesters, single parents, farm families, families with teens or small children. Many families when called upon to host, give you a laundry list of reasons why they can't host at this time. We do understand that everyone is busy and situations do arise, but those situations arise in other countries as well.
But know that the best host families are the busy ones. Our students are coming to live a "normal" American life with a host family. Which means that we will be busy, we will disagree, and we will cry and we will laugh. But the bottom line is that if you wait until you are not busy you will never host. Which would be a tragedy.
My heart is very big by hosting 12 students in our home, I would never have changed a thing. We live on a farm in rural Akron and could share with each of our students about farm life, which is an experience they would not have in their country. This volunteer opportunity is truly rewarding by bridging cultures and learning from our world neighbors. How many of us don't take the time to realize that this mission is vital to our country and most of us are more worried about our own well being than others?
I read many letters of appreciation and thanks from students and families saying they never would have thought what a wonderful thing they would have missed out on, if they didn't host. It changes your life and your understanding of the world forever.
I truly want to thank all the families that host. These families truly do give and share their heart each day by hosting and promoting world peace. I would like your family to join us in this worldly mission by hosting an International student. They are taking applications now for August 2009 arrival. Call the Indiana office at 574-893-1744 and ask for Tiffany or visit our regional Web site (www.isecrossroads.com) to see the current available students waiting to contact their American family.
