Event Connects Area Leaders and Non-Profits

WINONA LAKE - About 30 local not-for-profit organizations gathered Tuesday at Rodeheaver Auditorium to meet area leaders, potential board members and volunteers.

The event was called All Aboard. It was organized as this year's White Paper Project by Kosciusko Leadership Academy students. Kosciusko Community Foundation Development Director Brenda Rigdon said the goal of All Aboard is to connect KLA alumni and students to organizations in which their skills and passions can be used.

At the event, KLA students filled out time and talent surveys after talking with representatives of the various not-for-profits. The surveys identify areas of expertise, experience, time resources and interests of the students. The survey information will be stored in a database at the community foundation. When area not-for-profits are in need of new board members, they can contact the community foundation, which will forward information about possible candidates to them based on criteria that the organization is seeking.

Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. Curriculum Director Angie Miller attended All Aboard and distributed information on volunteer opportunities in the district's schools.

"This is an opportunity to get more people involved," Miller said. "We're really looking for business partnerships, such as class sponsors."

Lyn Crighton, director of operations for the Tippecanoe Environmental Lake & Watershed Foundation, said the event was a chance to connect with community leaders.

"We thought it was a great opportunity to potentially find board members and volunteers for our projects from leaders in our county," Crighton said.

Charles Neuwirth, a current KLA student, helped organize the event. Neuwirth said All Aboard was a chance for KLA alumni and students like him to gain familiarity with opportunities to give back to the community.

"I'm fairly new to the area, so this was good for me to see what organizations are in the area and what opportunities there are to help the community," he said.

This was the first year All Aboard was held. Rigdon said next year the event will be open to the public as well as KLA students and alumni.[[In-content Ad]]
