CHURUBUSCO – Evelyn Juanita Combs, 78, formerly of Garrett, died at 6:37 a.m. Jan. 27, 2012, in St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was hospitalized for the past six weeks, and had been taken to the hospital from Warsaw Meadows Care Center, where she had been a resident for nearly two years.
She was born Nov. 22, 1933, in Harriman, Tenn., to Henry and Bertha Cook Hyde. Three husbands preceded her in death, Floyd Cottrell, Doler Bevis and Wilburn Combs.
She spent most of her adult life in Garrett, where she worked as a cook at the Railroad Inn for 25 years, retiring in 2004.
Surviving are her children: Margaret Christlieb, Churubusco; Pat (and spouse Kevin) Rowe, Spencerville; Richard Cottrell, Auburn; Zelda Mayers, Woodburn; and Doler Otis “Dob” Bevis, Garrett; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by three children, two grandsons, five brothers and three sisters.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco, with the Rev. Michael Harris officiating. Burial will be in River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.
Calling is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday after 11 a. m. until the time of the service.
