COLUMBIA CITY - Eugene Allen Garwood, 86, of Larwill, died at 8:55 p.m. Jan. 15, 2009, in Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.

He was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Huntington, to Robert C. and Mary M. Cordel Garwood. In 1948, he married Mildred Pauline Johnston, who died in 1974.

He graduated from Bippus High School, Huntington County, in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-48. Formerly of Dunlap, Tenn., and Bippus, he lived in Whitley County since 1948. He was a factory worker at Phelps Dodge, Fort Wayne, retiring after 35-1/2 years of service. He attended Thorncreek Bethel Church of God, Columbia City, Larwill Methodist Church and Larwill Wesleyan Church. He was a member of Larwill Lion's Club and a lifetime member of the Huntington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689.

Surviving are two sons, John (and spouse Judy) Garwood and Michael (and spouse Lou Ann) Garwood, all of Larwill; a stepson, Paul (and spouse Pat) Johnston, Warsaw; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald (and spouse Jane) Garwood, La Fontaine. He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister, a stepson and a half sister.

Services were Monday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Pastor Thomas Beck officiating. Burial was in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Coesse, Whitley County, with military rites by members of Huntington VFW Post 2689.
