ETNA GREEN – About 34 residences are without water after a lightning strike caused an underground line to “explode” Tuesday evening on the west side of Etna Green.
Lightning struck a tree near the intersection of West Broadway and North Etna streets during a brief storm around 6:30 p.m., then jumped to a nearby metal signpost, according to town Water Superintendent Barry Baker. The charge traveled to the ground and caused a foot-and-a-half section of the line to burst, he said, splitting it for a length of 12 feet.
Town employees and a contractor finished repairs at 1 a.m., but those residents who lost water will be under a boil advisory probably until Friday, Baker said. He noted the water will have to pass two bacteria tests before it can be declared safe to drink.
He said this morning he will hand-deliver notices to the 29 trailers and five houses that lost water.
The town council held a rushed meeting at about 10 minutes past 7 p.m., when member Andy Cook came in from the scene of the burst pipe to join President Keith Claassen.
During the meeting they approved vacating the previously passed cumulative capital improvement fund, which had technical issues with paperwork, and to establish an identical fund at the same rate.[[In-content Ad]]
