In the Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, Fort Wayne Journal Gazette newspaper, State Representative David Wolkins was featured in the Perspectives Scorecard Column under the Losers Section. Representative Wolkins is one of just two "no" votes on ethics reform.

The article states that he earlier defended more than $3,200 in golfing trips and athletic event tickets received from lobbyists in the past year. Mr. Wolkins was quoted as saying, "In my 20 years, I've gained a lot of friends in the lobbying community. They know that I like sporting events."

Frankly, this is arrogant and shameful. Elected officials are to be public servants, not self serving. It is understandable why voters are distrustful of politicians especially when one reads about "gaining a lot of friends in the lobbying community" as mentioned by Representative Wolkins.

We desperately need a return to representative government of the people and not special interests. I hope Mr. Wolkins enjoys his time on the golf course with lobbyists while many of his constituents struggle to make ends meet.

Change will not happen unless you make your voice heard at the polls. A good start would be to not not vote for State Representative Wolkins in the next election.
