Many basketball teams have their "go-to guy" to score, rebound, steal and spark team spirit. For the Kosciusko County Homeschool Eagles Tuesday, that guy was Jon Erickson.

Erickson scored 33 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and grabbed five steals as the Eagles defeated the Lakeland Christian Academy Cougars 71-58.

Eighteen of Erickson's 33 points came on free throws, and nine of those came in the final quarter of play.

KCHE jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first two minutes of play, but the Cougars tied the score when Tim Buckholz netted a three-pointer with 5:20 on the clock.

LCA then built a 12-7 lead until Erickson scored eight consecutive points in the last 1:02 of the quarter to give KCHE a 15-12 lead going into the second frame.

Aaron Hood nailed a three-pointer to tie the score at 15 early in the second quarter, and the teams traded baskets from then on. The Eagles held a slim one-point lead until Justin Taylor was fouled as the last second ticked off the clock. Taylor hit one of his three charity shots to knot the score at 31-31 at halftime.

As the third quarter began, LCA and KCHE traded baskets, but LCA slowly built a 37-33 advantage. But the Eagles fought back.

KCHE held LCA nearly scoreless for the last 3:21 of the third quarter and went on a 12-3 run to take a 46-39 lead into the final quarter of play.

Although the final score was 71-58, the game was much closer than the score reflected. With just 1:29 left in the game, LCA cut KCHE's lead to two after Hood sank a three-pointer to make the score 58-56.

However, in the final minute of play, KCHE outscored LCA 13-2. The Eagles netted 9 of 11 free throws in the final minute to extend their lead.

"We played much better in the seond half," said KCHE coach John Erickson. "Free throws were good for us, especially in the fourth quarter."

Erickson was the only Eagle in double figures. He was 7-of-14 shooting and 18 of 20 from the charity stripe to total his 33 points.

"Jon is our team leader," said Erickson. "He stepped up when we needed him to and really gave the team a spark. Normally he is our floor leader and assists leader. This was a good game for him."

Two LCA players scored in double figures. Tim Buckholz, who was a perfect 4 for 4 from behind the arc and 5 of 5 overall, finished the night with 23 points and four rebounds. Hood added 20 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Cougars.

"We played well in the first half," said LCA coach Dan Miller. "The second half was different because we were in such foul trouble. Our leading scorer, Aaron Hood, had three fouls in the first quarter.

"I have to give (KCHE) credit. They played very well, especially in the second half. Defensively they eliminated our two biggest scorers, Aaron and Tim, in the second half."

"I'm very proud of our team's performance tonight," said KCHE Erickson. "Defense was the key. We were able to shut down their top two scorers in the second half.

"I have a lot of respect for Lakeland. They played a whale of a ball game, and I attribute that to good coaching."

KCHE is now 9-2 on the season, while LCA falls to 4-6 overall. KCHE will travel to Fort Wayne Christian School for a game Saturday. LCA hosts Clinton Friday.
