SYRACUSE - Despite the rumors, a date for the demolition of the scout cabin at Crosson Mill Park, Syracuse, has never been discussed.
In fact, no decision on the long-term fate of the scout cabin has been made. "That decision has not been made yet," Mike Hixenbaugh, Syracuse Parks and Recreation Superintendent, said today.
Monday, the Syracuse Park Board approved $500 for Progressive Engineering, Goshen, to study the building and come up with a plan to address the safety issue of the cabin. The engineering firm also will provide a cost estimate on how much it will take to revamp the building.
Hixenbaugh said he hopes they will have the information by February.
"I would like to be able to say to everyone in the community, 'This is the problem and this is what it's going to take to fix it,'" said Hixenbaugh.
On Dec. 1, the Syracuse Park Board closed the scout cabin at Crosson Mill Park, Syracuse.
According to a previous Progressive Engineering Inc. study, the "roof structure is not adequate to safely carry the full snow loads required by the Indiana Uniform Building Code for northern Indiana."
In other business, the park board directed Hixenbaugh to find out if a building corporation is needed for the Lakeside Park Community Center. Hixenbaugh also gave a report on the fund- raising effort for the center.
"Write the Superintendent" is a contest the park department is sponsoring to find out what elementary and middle school students want at the community center. Hixenbaugh gave a brief report on it to the board and said there are prizes for the contest.
Several encumbrances were approved by the park board including: $3,100 for gazebo maintenance and painting; $280 for regular picnic grills; not to exceed $2,000 for office computer; $4,176 for 24 Christmas ornaments for parks; $10,000 for a master plan and master plan survey; $8,000 for architectural fees for the community center; $500 for the scout cabin study; $3,000 for landscaping of Hoy's Beach; $1,479.99 for a generator; $244.99 for a hammer drill; $199.95 for a drill press; $227.10 for a 600-foot swim rope; and $116 for rope buoys.
