MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Running second in Friday's Memphis 150 ARCA RE/MAX Series event, 25-year-old ML Motorsports driver Jason Jarrett was again slowed by engine problems.
The Hickory, N.C., native was reeling in frontrunner Frank Kimmel, the series points leader, but lost oil pressure on lap 117 of 200. Jarrett, the son of Winston Cup champ Dale Jarrett, finished the race 24th.
"There's guys that can go 500 miles on their engines, surely they can build one for a 150- or 200-mile race," Jarrett said. "It's not anybody's fault, sometimes it just happens. It's something we've gotta be able to fix. We're gonna sit down and try and figure out what the problem is. We have better equipment than 3/4 of the field, and those guys are finishing seventh or eighth because they're finishing the race."
In his first career ARCA start, Florida driver Billy Bigley took the checkered flag, passing pole-sitter Rick Carelli in turn four on the final lap. Following Bigley and Carelli were Kimmel, Stanton Barrett and Jeff Falk.
Michigan driver Tim Steele, who is currently second in the standings, crossed the stripe in 14th, six laps down.
Jarrett's Warsaw-based team made adjustments to the No. 67 Biomet/Damon RV Monte Carlo on lap 74. After that, Jarrett made his charge to the front.
"We were running up front up until we broke," Jarrett said. "We were pretty good on short runs. We were starting to get loose in the corner and tight off the corner, but I knew it was a problem we could fix. We pitted on lap 74 and fixed the problem. We got on the track and got right back up through the field."
Jarrett remains fourth in the series standings with 2,305 points. Kimmel leads with 2,990, followed by Steele (2,875) and Andy Belmont (2,460). Tennessee driver Ron Cox rounds out the top five with 2,250 points.
The ML Motorsports team will be in action again July 7 at the 2.45-mile road course in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
