Elusive Third Point Leads To More Warsaw Losses
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw varsity girls tennis coach Mike Baber and his team are searching for something, and in the last two matches they didn't find it.
The Tigers followed a 3-2 setback at Tippecanoe Valley Monday with a 3-2 loss at home Thursday to Northern Lakes Conference rival Wawasee. Warsaw got its points from the same players both nights, leaving them searching for a third point.
"No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles came through for us again," Baber said, "but we have to find that third point."
At No. 3 singles sophomore Lauren Witzky easily disposed of sophomore Alex Heckaman 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 2 doubles Angie Suchecki and Tracy Yoder got by Kayla Auer and Ashley Ganz 6-3, 6-2.
The Warriors won because, as Baber said, "They won the big points."
Wawasee won both the No. 1 singles and doubles matches.
At No. 1 singles, Wawasee's Mandy Perzanowski took care of Abbie Simmons 6-2, 6-0.
"Abbie has run into some really tough competition with (Valley's Carissa) Parker and Perzanowski," Baber said. "They're really good players and they're also seniors. Be it Abbie scratching out a win or Amber (Barrett) picking up a win, we have to get that third point somewhere. We've got players that can win we just have to close out."
Said Wawasee coach Phil Mishler: "Perzanowski hasn't been in a close match yet, she's picked up her play ten-fold."
In the No. 1 doubles match, Wawasee's team of senior Laura Lundin and sophomore Margo Searfoss topped junior Kara Kesler and sophomore Liza Weidenbenner 6-4, 6-3.
"Our No. 1 doubles team played really good," Mishler said. "We came in expecting to win. We knew they had been to state and that they were very good, but we played them tough. I think we're a better doubles team than we were last year."
The loss drops Warsaw's overall season mark to 4-3 and its conference mark to 1-2. The Warriors are now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
With the score even after four matches, the fate of either team rested on the outcome of the No. 2 singles match.
In a match that seemed to last an eternity, Wawasee freshman Kate Murphy topped junior Amber Barrett 6-4, 6-3.
"It was a very close match," Baber said of the No. 2 singles contest. "It was very back and forth and it could've went either way. I'm proud of Amber, and Kate played a great match."
Warsaw won the junior varsity contest 3-2, picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles positions.
Warsaw will be on the courts again Monday in a rescheduled match with Northridge. The JV Tigers will participate in the Penn Invitational Saturday.
Wawasee hosts conference foe Goshen tonight at 4:30 p.m.
