Elmer Howard, 90, Claypool, died  at 4:32 p.m. Oct. 20, 2011, at Mason Health and Rehabilitation Center, Warsaw.
He was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Salyersville, Ky., to Rose Minnix and Green Howard. In August 1939, he married Lorene Renee Howard, who preceded him in death in June 1990. In December 1992, he married Lena Deaton, who survives.
He was a longtime resident of Claypool. He graduated from Claypool High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then worked on the railroad as a maintainers helper, retiring after 42 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 49, Warsaw and Claypool Lions Club. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Claypool Fire Department and attended Claypool United Methodist Church.
He is also survived by two children, including Penny (and spouse Gary) Myers, Bloomington, and Linda (and spouse Bill) Miller, Warsaw; three step-children, John (and spouse Janet) Deaton, Claypool, Jerry (and spouse JoEllen) Deaton, Warsaw, and Jane Stoops, Warsaw; a brother, Mac Howard, Wheatfield; two stepsisters, Celia (and spouse Bill) Hershman, Wheatfield, and Mary Arnett, Wheatfield; a step-brother, Roscoe Jackson, Wheatfield; six grandchildren, Kate Myers, Bloomington; Rachel Myers, Bloomington; Sheri (and spouse Jack) Bryant, Warsaw; Tonya (and spouse Dave) Warner, South Whitley; Nichole Swain, Warsaw, and Michelle Hobbs, Warsaw; four step-grandchildren, Jason Stoops, Warsaw, Jarrod Deaton, Warsaw, Jacob (and spouse Katie) Deaton, Warsaw, and Angie (and spouse Eric) Jungbauer, Indianapolis; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, sister, brother and a granddaughter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Evelyn Haney officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake, with military honors by the American Legion Post No. 49 and VFW Post No. 1126, Warsaw.
Calling is from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
