Records: Elkhart Memorial 5-9, 3-2 NLC; Warsaw 10-5, 3-2 NLC

Last game: Goshen 70, Elkhart Memorial 52; Warsaw 86, FW South Side 50

Last year: Warsaw 65, Elkhart Memorial 63

Matchup: After this game, Warsaw closes out the regular season by playing four out of five games on the road. Elkhart Memorial enters having lost five of its last seven. Warsaw enters having won three of four and seven of its last nine. Josh Buck leads Warsaw with 15.1 points per game and is followed by Greg Clay at 9.8 and Paul Finnegan at 8.2. Finnegan averages 6.2 rebounds per game, and Buck follows with 5.1. Memorial's top scorers are Eric Smith (15.2 ppg), Quinnell Young (12 ppg) and Kyle Sears (10 ppg). Miller and Sears each average 7.0 rpg.

Johnson: "When we have played well, our defense has played well. We're 5-9, but we lost three games to three tough opponents in overtime. Warsaw is very deep and can run people in and out of the lineup. They have eight or nine guys they can play, and any five they pick are very respectable. They very seldom have a lapse in their team defense."

Rhodes: "Memorial has been a very up-and-down team. They have played well on some nights, but on others, they haven't played as well. It looks like they move the ball well on offense. Smith is a good shooter on the wings. I think they are better than their 5-9 record, but they play a tough schedule. This game is very important for us as we would like to play consistently on offense from one game to another."

Warsaw Falls In First Round Of Jimtown Regional

By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Writer

ELKHART -ÊAt Wednesday's team wrestling regional at Jimtown, Warsaw lost to NorthWood 40-28 in the opening round.

The Panthers were informed by the IHSAA only the night before that their team would be competing in the event. Goshen had been originally scheduled, but the school was disqualified when it was discovered that two of the Redskins had participated in too many events during the season. Goshen had 187 points and NorthWood 177.5 at the sectional, but Goshen's two disqualifications made NorthWood the sectional champion.

Because of the short notice, several NorthWood wrestlers did not make weight and had to move up to wrestle in heavier weight classes. After little time for preparation, the Panthers showed up to wrestle, and a catfight with the Tigers ensued.

NorthWood roared into action with pins in the first two matches. Adam Jenkins (103 pounds) nailed Warsaw's Robert Raymer, and then Josh Richmond (112) took out Phillip Anuta.

The Tigers answered back with two consecutive wins by points in technical falls (15 points or more).

Anthony Boley (119) racked up a 21-6 technical fall over A.J. Rhymer. Tanner Connealy (125) blanked Zack Anderson in a 15-0 technical fall.

This put the team score at 12-10, the closest the Tigers came to NorthWood all evening.

NorthWood widened the lead by winning the next three matches. Dillon Whitacre (130), who had moved up a weight class, defeated Kyle Boley 4-0, and Troy Cox, who also moved up, clawed out a 14-2 major decision against Adam Bott.

Warsaw's Matt Paladino (140) was pinned in a banana split by Brandon Garner at 3:05. John Milton (145) came up with a win for the Tigers, defeating Josh Metzler 4-1. Brandon Cordell (152) was down 9-0 when he was pinned by Chad Davis at 4:29.

Nate Milton (160) won another narrow decision for Warsaw when he defeated E.J. Yehl 6-4. Richard Wolfe (171) collected the first of Warsaw's two lone pins when he nailed Randy Mitschelen at 3:52. Neal Widmer (189) sealed the win for NorthWood when he took a 5-1 decision over Tyler Miller.

Tiger Kris Hueber (215) tallied a 7-1 lead over David Mishler by the end of the first period. The second period started with both wrestlers standing, then in four seconds, Hueber squeezed Mishler in a bear hug and got the fall at 2:04. NorthWood's Jamie Garcia (275) put on the finishing touches for the Panthers when he pinned David Ferguson at 1:44.

Championship round

NorthWood went on to face Jimtown in the finals. Jimtown, ranked No. 16 with a 30-2 record, dismantled Fremont (24-5) 53-15 in the opening round.

In the finals, NorthWood won only five of the 14 matches, all by decision. The Jimmies won the first four weight classes convincingly with a major decision and three falls.

The next five matchups went to NorthWood in simple decisions, and the team score stood at 22-15. The final five bouts went to Jimtown - four falls and a simple decision as the Jimmies won the championship 49-15.

The next event on the wrestling schedule for Warsaw is the individual regional at Goshen on Saturday. Wrestlers who placed either first or second in the sectional advance to the regional. Out of the Warsaw Sectional, Warsaw sends 11, while Triton sends six, Plymouth seven and Tippecanoe Valley four qualifiers.
