COLUMBIA CITY – Elizabeth L. “Betty” Zumbrun, 86, Columbia City, passed away peacefully at 5:24 a.m. Oct. 24, 2015, at Kingston at DuPont, Fort Wayne.
She was born Nov. 15, 1928, in Kokomo, Howard County, to Gilbert Bryan and Florence Summers Harvey. On Sept. 20, 1947, in Collins, she married James William Truman, who preceded her in death in 1968. On July 15, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nev., she married Robert L. Zumbrun, who preceded her in death in 2009.
She lived in several locations as a child, including Bloomfield, Mich., and Kokomo prior to moving to Columbia City. When she was a young girl she loved to sing and tap dance as her mother would play the piano. One unusual thing as a very small child she loved to sweep and clean with her mother. This trait carried on throughout her lifetime.
She was known to have an all-white home décor with touches of peach and mint, her two favorite colors. Like so many teenagers in Whitley County, the Happy Valley Skating Rink was the place to be the 1940s. So was the case with Betty Harvey when she met a young handsome man by the name of James William Truman, who she later married.
After graduating from high school, she first worked at Blue Bell, Columbia City, then was employed at General Electric and Wolf & Dessauer, both in Fort Wayne. From 1960 to 1971 she was also employed at Dana Corporation, Fort Wayne. She was the bookkeeper for Morsches Lumber Company from the early 1970s until her retirement in 1994. Betty made the perfect bookkeeper with her mathematical skills and attention to details. She enjoyed bowling and was on a ladies league for many years. In Betty’s later years she loved to golf and was a member of Tippecanoe Country Club. She and her husband, Bob, spent many winters in Deltona, Fla.
Her memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church, where she was a former choir member; Delta Theta Tau; a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star; and in 1965 she was the Grand Representative to the Nebraska convention. She was one of the founders of Jobs Daughters. Her positive attitude and warm smile always drew folks close to her.
Surviving are a son, Barry A. (and spouse Kathy) Truman, Columbia City; two stepdaughters, Mary June (and spouse Dan) Avery, Fort Wayne, and Jerry Lynn McGhghy, Fowler, Ill.; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; several step-grandchildren; and a sister, Vivian Dean (and spouse Lee) Coulter, Pensacola, Fla. She was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Lee Truman, who died in 2008; a brother, Everett Harvey; and a sister, Alma June Warnock.
A twilight memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. today by the Order of Eastern Star, Columbia City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Pastor David Arnold officiating. Burial will follow at Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
