She was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Kearney, New Jersey, to Ernest and Mary Freitag. She was the youngest of their four children. In 1939, she married Frank J. O'Neil, who died in 1989.
Educated in New Jersey, she worked for Bell Telephone Co. until she met and subsequently married Frank. They began to raise their family of five in the east and then relocated to northwestern Indiana in 1957. She loved the beach and enjoyed their home near Lake Michigan and would spend as much time as she could with her family on the lake. An excellent swimmer, she would play in the lake with the children as long as they would. She also was employed for a number of years as a bookkeeper/secretary. Their first retirement began in a home on Saw Mill Lake in the early 1970s and she and her entire family enjoyed spending time at the lake house. They moved to Florida in the late 1970s and continued their retirement activities of fishing, boating and snow-free winters. She returned to Syracuse after being widowed, to be near her family. A devout Catholic all of her life, she was very active in the parish of St. Martin de Porres. She was tireless in her efforts to help others and was a frequent volunteer at Miller's Merry Manor, making popcorn, visiting with residents and crocheting blankets. She also volunteered after school at Syracuse Elementary. She was honored several years in a row for her volunteer work. She loved nature and walked every day that she could around Syracuse and any visitor would be encouraged to join her. When she was no longer able to live independently she moved to Colorado into an assisted living facility near her daughter Skye. She continued to enjoy frequent visits from her family and loved the Rocky Mountains. She died peacefully in the presence of her family at the Collier Hospice Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo.
Surviving are four daughters: Pat (and spouse Charles) Haddock, Rockport, Texas; Judy (and spouse Bob) Prado, Leesburg; Fran Hutchens, Mooresville, N.C.; and Skye O'Neil, Denver, Colo; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son Michael, who died in 2004.
She was an extraordinarily well-loved woman who will be missed by her family and many friends more than any words could express.
