SYRACUSE - Eleanor F. Bates, 93, formerly of Warsaw, died of natural causes at 12:15 a.m. April 25, 2008, in Houston, Texas, where she resided.

She was born March 9, 1915, in Fort Wayne, to Alva and Ruth Blain Arnold. In 1934, she married Lionel G. Bates, who died in May 1993.

After her marriage she moved to Chicago; returned to Syracuse in 1949; moved to Villa Park, Ill., in 1952; retired to Syracuse in 1978; moved to Indianapolis; and then to Houston. She owned and operated a custom drapery and bedspread business in Villa Park. She was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Syracuse, and was a former member of First United Methodist Church, Elmhurst, Ill. For many years she was active in the Lake Wawasee Quilt Club, Wednesday Afternoon Club, various women's church circles and the church's thrift shop.

Surviving are a son, Joel G. (and spouse Dee) Bates, Houston, Texas; a daughter, Janice E. Bates Knaus, Indianapolis; four grandchildren: Greg (and spouse Ute) Bates, Pembroke Pines, Fla.; Colin Bates, Houston; Allison Bates (and spouse Paul) Free, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and Kevin (and spouse Lisa) Knaus, Valparaiso; and seven great-grandchildren: John, Matthew, Philip and Timmy Bates, and Austin, Cameron and Chandler Knaus. She was preceded in death by four sisters, twin Ruth Arnold Jacobs, Mary Arnold Jacobs, Virginia Arnold Peterson and Barbara Arnold Todaro.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with Pastor Mark Eastway officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, is in charge of arrangements.
