He was born May 31, 1917, in Lake Township, Kosciusko County, to Homer and Iva Beigh Metzger. On Jan. 14, 1939, he married M. Louise Penrod, who survives.
He graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1935. He was a farmer, and he built and operated the former Junction 13 & 14 Service Station. He was also a DeKalb Seed Corn salesman for 25 years. He was a member of Eel River Community Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake.
He was a former member of the Sidney Lions Club and drove school bus for Sidney Schools for 21 years. He served as a Republican precinct committeeman for Jackson 2 for 25 years. He served four years on the Whitko Community School board during the planning and construction of Whitko High School. Prior to serving on the school board, he was Jackson Township trustee. For eight years he served as a Kosciusko County councilman, three of those years as president. He retired from farming 10 years ago and continued with his passion for gardening and could often be found enjoying his family, friends and fellowship. He and his wife, Louise, were married 75 years. He was blessed with a long and productive life, having farmed in Kosciusko County for over 75 years with the last 70 years in Jackson Township. He was an avid gardener and cared for his home and lawn up until going home to meet our Heavenly Father.
Also surviving are his daughter, Carolyn Metzger Smith, Fort Wayne; three grandchildren: Mark (and spouse Tammi) Smith, Huntertown; Brian (and spouse Patricia) Smith and Dawn (and spouse Kevin) Nofzinger, all of Garrett; a brother, Everett Metzger, Silver Lake; nine great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at McKee Mortuary, 1401 Ind. 114W, North Manchester, with Pastor Andrew Sampson officiating. Burial is in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
