Eldon W. Smith, 88, of 1630 S. County Farm Road, Warsaw, died at 1:05 p.m. March 23, 2008, in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw.

He was born May 3, 1919, in Larwill, to Edgar H. and Minnie F. Snodgrass Smith. On Jan. 1, 1946, he married Waneta F. Linn, who died in 1989.

A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer, a truck driver and worked for the county highway department. After retirement he worked for his son-in-law, Dan Ransbottom, at Ransbottom Landfill, Claypool. He was a member of Packerton United Methodist Church; Warsaw Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126; Pierceton American Legion Post 258; Pierceton Masonic Lodge 377 F&AM Fort Wayne Valley Scottish Rite; and Mizpah Shrine. He served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army (Pacific Theater) from 1941-45. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Also, he was a wonderful friend who touched the lives of many people.

Surviving are four daughters: Sharon (and spouse John) Scott, Syracuse; Eilleen (and spouse Dan) Ransbottom, Claypool; Ruth Smith, Bourbon; and Leasa Decker, Pierceton; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lana (and spouse Tom) Miner, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Sellers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Noel Reed officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, with military graveside honors by members of Pierceton American Legion.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. by members of Pierceton Masonic Lodge 377.
