NORTH MANCHESTER - Edith E. "Betty" Chapman, 87, of North Manchester, died at 10:01 a.m. Oct. 25, 2008, in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

She was born March 24, 1921, in Talma, to Fred D. and Fern Arter Barr. On July 11, 1942, she married Ralph P. Chapman, who survives.

She was a registered nurse for 41 years, working at Gary Methodist Hospital; Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester; hospitals in Kansas and New Jersey; Wabash County Hospital; and Manchester Clinic, where she retired in 1983. She was a member of Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester, and Epsilon Sigma Alpha for 23 years. She graduated from East Chicago High School in 1939, and Gary Methodist School of Nursing in 1942.

Also surviving are a son, Bruce Chapman (and companion Phillip Addario), Westport, Conn.; a daughter, Susan (and spouse Bill) Greer, North Manchester; a sister, Lois (and spouse Grover) Everhart, Kingsport, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Peabody Chapel, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Reichter Cemetery, Talma.

Calling is from noon until 2 p.m. today at the chapel.

DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, is in charge of arrangements.
