She was born Aug. 22, 1936, in LaGrange, to Moses E. and Goldie F. Miller Mast. On Aug. 25, 1954, in Syracuse, she married Owen D. Avery, who died Dec. 7, 1986.
She lived all of her life in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties, permanently moving to Syracuse in 1952 from Millersburg. She attended Millersburg public schools. She was a homemaker and retired from the Wawasee Community School Corp. as a custodian at Wawasee High School after 15-1/2 years. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 223 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 1382, both in Syracuse. She attended New Salem Church of the Brethren and formerly attended Church of the Brethren, Syracuse.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon (and spouse Dewayne) Lemler, Nappanee, and Esther (and spouse Gary) Fisher, Leesburg; three stepsons, Frederick (and spouse Eleanor) Avery, Plymouth, and Jimmie (and spouse Crystal) Avery and Allen (and spouse Carol) Avery, all of Syracuse; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; three sisters, Lillian (and spouse Randy) Oakes, Elkhart; Evelyn (and spouse Karl), Penndrill, Celina, Texas; and Irma Yakim, Syracuse; and two brothers, LeRoy Mast, Ligonier, and Alvin (and spouse Cheryl) Mast, Frostproof, Fla. She also was preceded in death by three sons, a grandson, a granddaughter, a great-grandson, a step-grandson, four sisters and five brothers.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse, with Pastor Dean Kagarise officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
