Eaton's Buzzer-Beater Carries Valley Past Oak Hill

AKRON -ÊAs the season progresses, Tippecanoe Valley, and especially its star Trey Eaton, will find teams playing them more physically.

It's a common tactic employed by teams with the hope of disrupting a player or team's offense.

Oak Hill bodied up and bullied Eaton and his teammates all night and it worked on Eaton for 31:59.

The 6-foot-4 guard/forward looked frustrated and out of step most of the game. He shot only 8 of 21 from the field. That didn't matter however when the layup he put down as time expired gave Valley a 56-55 win over the Golden Eagles.

With 9.3 seconds left to play and down by one, Valley coach Bill Patrick called a timeout. The Vikings came out of the timeout with the inbounds at half court.

"We had Trey come off a screen by (Shane) Drudge. He got the shot off and normally would have made it," said Patrick.

The missed shot would be his 13th and final of the evening. Eaton followed his shot and fought off several Oak Hill defenders and a couple teammates to gather the offensive rebound.

The put-back sailed through as time expired causing fans, coaches, and players to storm the court.

The Vikings could have saved the dramatics for another day.

Valley held onto a tenuous one-point lead with 35.1 seconds left to play.

After Oak Hill's Derrick Hall missed a runner that was altered by Drudge, senior Casey Wise came up with the rebound. Hall then proceeded to commit a foul sending Wise to the line.

Wise missed on both attempts in the double bonus giving the Golden Eagles the ball and new life. Oak Hill ran the ball down the court at a furious pace as they had done all night. Hall found instant redemption when he shook his defender and got the ball underneath for what seemed to be the game winner.

Besides having trouble with Oak Hill's physicality, Valley seemed to have trouble controlling the pace of the game. Both teams treated the first half like a track meet. Oak Hill applied a full court press that often frustrated the Vikings and forced them to play outside of themselves.

Without junior Stuart Jackson who severely tore his ACL and a bad flu bug that has run roughshod in Akron, Valley looked out of sync quite often.

One of those players who was sick much of the week was Drudge. The freshman center could only play in three minute stretches most of the night. When he was in however he made the most of his time.

Whether it was Oak Hill's inability to find a good matchup against the 6-6 14-year-old or fear of him being contagious, Drudge was huge with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

Drudge's biggest asset all night was his ability to alter shots in the post. Oak Hill combated that with Travis Owsley. The senior guard was quick to shoot from outside all evening.

The state's ninth leading scorer was quite ordinary from the field. He was able to score 19 points on the evening but those came off 7-of-21 shooting. Surprisingly only five of those came in the fourth quarter when Valley was forced to move to a zone.

Foul trouble by Eaton and reserve Brandon Cody led to Patrick's effective, if not unplanned, change of defense. It also took some of Oak Hill's physicality out of the game.

"We told them at halftime, just go out and play and don't let anything outside of the game bother you," said Patrick.

That was accomplished. While they never held a lead of more than five in the second half, the Vikings committed one less turnover in the second half and were able to control the pace of the game.

In many respects, Valley looked extremely frustrated in the first half and was forced to play catch up for most of it.

The first quarter was the only one in which Eaton was able to connect shooting 3 of 6 from the field.

"They were holding him and hitting him on his shot all night," said Patrick of Oak Hill's defense on his prized player. "I think (the refs) look at Trey and how physical he is and think he can handle it. But with that and seven of our kids being sick this week I'm just glad to have the win."

Patrick may need to invest in some ice packs for Eaton and Nyquil for the rest as the turnaround will be quick for his Vikings. Now 15-1 overall and 5-1 in the Three Rivers Conference, Valley will travel to Denver to face an 11-5 North Miami squad Thursday night. The Warriors look to play spoilers. Valley can win the TRC title outright with a win.
