East Chicago Central Too Much For Warsaw Girls
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
If it wasn't certain how much senior guard Julie Seiss means to the Warsaw girls basketball team, Friday night's 51-36 loss to visiting East Chicago Central cleared things up.
Seiss left the game with 4:25 left in the third quarter after sustaining an injury to her surgically repaired right shoulder and her team down 26-23.
While Seiss returned to start the fourth quarter it was too late as the Cardinals outscored Warsaw 13-4 during the Butler-bound guard's absence to push their lead to double digits at 39-27.
With Seiss out the Tigers looked uncertain on offense and mismatched on defense.
Seiss' defensive assignment for the night came in the form of Purdue signee DeeDee Jernigan. Jernigan was held to just three points in the first half while being guarded by Seiss and managed just four points in the final quarter.
During that decisive 4:25 span in the third quarter, Jernigan scored six points and created havoc on the defensive end.
"In the second half we were just flat," said second-year Warsaw head coach John Snyder. "Individual defense was something we did not take care of."
The Tigers were burned by the three-headed monster of Jernigan, Taaje'e McKinley and Kelly Watts.
In her first game back from a knee injury, McKinley scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting while the Eastern Michigan-bound Watts scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
Jernigan struggled from the field at times but finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The boards definitely went in favor of the Cardinals as they outrebounded Warsaw 31-13.
Most of those misses came in the first half however, as the Cardinals shot a mind-boggling 85 percent (17 of 20) in the second half.
Many of those shots came from close range as East Chicago used its size and aggressive penetration to create easy baskets.
"We started to play tentative in the second half," said Snyder. "We started worrying about individuals and the team defense started to dissipate."
The Cardinals were a perfect 6 of 6 in the final quarter to thwart any chance the Tigers had of crawling back into the contest.
Seiss scored Warsaw's first five points of the final eight minutes but appeared to have lingering issues with her shoulder.
"When (Seiss) came back out, even though she hit some shots, she wasn't the same," said Snyder.
Seiss ended the evening with 17 points but was just 7 of 19 from the field and shot just 2 of 6 in the fourth quarter.
Warsaw jumped out to a five-point lead late in the second quarter at 18-13 as the Tigers tried to set up for the final shot of the half.
It appeared as if there was some confusion by Warsaw as to what the final play of the half would be and Jernigan took advantage as she stole the ball from Seiss at half court and cruised in for a layup to end the half and put the Cardinals down by just a basket at 18-15.
What could have been a potential seven or eight-point lead for the Tigers at the break turned into a one-possession game and gave East Chicago plenty of momentum heading into the second half.
"I thought for 15 minutes and 50 seconds of the first half we played the game exactly how we wanted to play it. There was just some confusion at the end there and I'm not quite sure what happened," said Snyder.
Warsaw finished just 14 of 40 from the field for the game with Seiss taking almost half of those shots.
"I'm disappointed with how our girls played but they battled," said Snyder. "The problem was in the second half our confidence was rattled."
Rounding out the scoring for Warsaw was Amy Abbitt with five, Danielle DeGeeter and Kate Denlinger with four and Jennifer Scherer, Tasia Smith and Megan Wood with two points each.
Snyder said he wasn't sure the extent to which Seiss hurt her shoulder and wouldn't know until it was looked at by the Warsaw training staff more closely.
With the loss, Warsaw drops to 10-4 on the season. The Tigers return to Northern Lakes Conference action tonight when they take on Concord in the Tiger Den. The Tigers are currently 3-1 in the NLC and trail undefeated Plymouth in the race for a conference crown.
Tipoff for the JV contest is 6:15 p.m.
