Howard is asking for the community's help with Operation Backpack.
Volunteers of America started Operation Backpack across the nation several years ago. At the beginning of each school year, groups across the nation collect school supplies for students who are in financial need. Howard's project will be collecting school supplies for Manchester Elementary School students.
Howard has gotten approval from Dr. Diana Showalter, Manchester Community Schools superintendent, and Bonnie Ingram, Manchester Elementary School principal, for this project.[[In-content Ad]]The community can help in two ways. You can donate new or gently used school supplies. You can place the items in boxes located in many Manchester churches, businesses or clubs. The second way is by donating cash at some of the many change jars located throughout Manchester.
If you are interested in making a donation and either cannot locate a donation receptacle or do not want to leave it there, you are encouraged to call Howard at [email protected] to arrange for someone to pick up your donation.
Howard will be collecting donations through Aug. 2. After gathering all of the donation receptacles, he will determine what needs to be bought to round out a student's backpack to start school and using the donated money will purchase these items.
Howard will present Ingram with the proceeds from Operation Backpack before registration.
This way families that qualify will know before school starts that they will not have to spend their limited funds on back-to-school items.
