WEST LAFAYETTE - In the most-hyped game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Purdue Boilermakers came out as cold as the fans who camped outside of Mackey Arena.

Beginning the game 0 of 5 from the field, the Boilers found themselves in a quick 7-0 hole and never recovered, losing 76-60.[[In-content Ad]]"We just never got off to a good start," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "We really had careless mistakes and shots not go down."

After going the first four minutes of the game without a point, Chris Kramer and Robbie Hummel hit back-to-back buckets for the Boilers, but that 7-4 deficit was as close as No. 10 Purdue could get.

"We have to move on from this and get better," Hummel said. "We need to."

Following a 5-0 start to the season, Purdue has now dropped back-to-back games, the first being an 87-82 overtime setback to No. 6 Oklahoma Friday.

"They are quality teams," Hummel said about his team's two losses. "We just need to go back to square-one."

In going back to square-one, Painter and his coaching staff will probably begin with working on rebounding.

Facing a team with supposed frontcourt problems, Purdue was outrebounded 49-29.

"We have to learn from losses, and I think we will," Painter said.

Duke was led to victory by the scoring of Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer, each scoring 20 points, while Singler also hauled in a game-high 12 boards.

"Jon and Kyle are players playing at a high level," said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Sheyer was the Boilers' biggest problem in the opening half, hitting two three-pointers that took some breath out of the Boilers. In the second half, it was Singler who began to find his stroke, and put an exclamation point on the game with a thunderous two-handed dunk, giving his team a 67-55 lead with 1:52 remaining.

"Give Duke credit," Painter said of the team that improved to 10-0 in ACC/Big Ten Challenge play. "They play you tough and take you out of what you want to do."

Purdue was led by Hummel's 15 points and eight rebounds, followed by JaJuan Johnson's 12 points and E'Twaun Moore's 10.

Moore had hoped to get more involved in the offense, but the Blue Devils' defense held him in check, forcing him into four turnovers and a 5-for-12 shooting night.

"It's not often you get an opportunity to play teams of this quality," Moore said of facing Duke. "We definitely missed an opportunity. We just have to take it in stride, go into the next few games and play better."

While Duke was making a rare trip to West Lafayette, Warsaw-native Miles Plumlee was returning to a place where his mother, Leslie, played basketball and he attended summer basketball camps.

"It brings back a lot of memories," Plumlee said. "I attended basketball camps here, so back then, I couldn't have imagined playing here. Let alone, coming here in a Duke uniform. It's pretty exciting."

Playing just 2:29 of the game, Plumlee wouldn't have minded playing a little more in front of family and friends, but knows work in practice will increase minutes in games.

"I've been watching a lot of tape, trying to get better and see what I can do to get the team better," the 6-foot-10, 230-pound freshman said. "I'd like to have a big impact on the game. Right now, I'm just trusting Coach K. I think I'll get more minutes if I keep working at it."

For now, Duke's doing just fine, and Krzyzewski doesn't see Purdue far behind.

"If we play Purdue a number of times, they're going to beat us a few times," he said. "At the end of the season, Purdue's going to be one of the teams there."
