The folks at the Cardinal Center are feeling just ducky about this year's fundraiser - a duck race. In addition to selling 5,000 rubber ducks, the promotion package includes a full-size duck suit. Various employees have donned the big yellow outfit and made several appearances this summer.

"Quacky's final appearance will be at the duck race in Bixler Park Saturday," said Michelle Boxell, Cardinal Center's community relations manager. "The ducks will 'race' at 10 a.m."

The first duck across the finish line earns the keeper of the lucky number $5,000. Ducks are $5 per chance or $25 for six ducks. Sales will continue at the Country Music Concert Friday night. People buying ducks tomorrow will receive a "quack pack" full of goodies and a ducky Mardi Gras-style necklace.

Ducks can still be purchased Saturday at Bixler Park prior to the race on Center Lake. The day starts with a puppet show at 9 a.m. and a celebrity duck race at 9:30 a.m.

The fundraiser benefits Cardinal's children's programs, which serve approximately 2,000 children and their family members each year.

Programs include:

• First Steps for children up to 3 years old. First Steps is an early intervention program for young children who are experiencing developmental delays, at risk for delays or have a medical diagnosis of a disability.

• Head Start for ages 3- to 5-years-old. The program offers educational, nutritional, medical and dental services. Speech, occupational or physical therapy services are available and lunch and transportation are usually provided. Social services for parents are available to help them locate work, obtain a GED, meet goals or get emergency help, if needed.

• Early Head Start is for children up to 3-years-old.

• Healthy Families is a voluntary home visitation program offered to first-time parents of newborns. Designed to strengthen families, the program promotes healthy childhood growth and development. Overburdened families learn problem-solving skills.

• Women, Infants and Children is for women and children up to age 5. The program also provides food vouchers and nutritional counseling. More than 1,200 local participants receive benefits that play an important role in eliminating conditions that may lead to premature births, low birth weights and infant fatalities. Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
