The driver who caused a June 28 traffic accident, which resulted in one death and seven injuries, tested positive for marijuana, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

Lisa Schmucker, 23, of South Whitley, died July 7 from internal injuries suffered in the three-vehicle accident on Ind. 13, south of Old Road 30, near Pierceton.

According to the KCSD, Tonya Gudakunst, 35, of Pierceton, rear-ended the car in which Schmucker was a back-seat passenger. The impact between Gudakunst's Jeep and the car driven by Chancy Schmucker, 24, of South Whitley, pushed the Schmucker car into the path of an oncoming truck driven by Leonard Seibel Jr., 48, of Pennsylvania. The Schmucker car then came to rest against a utility pole on the driver's side. Lisa Schmucker was seated on the driver's side of the car and her 4-year-old daughter, Davanna Schmucker, was strapped into a child safety seat in the middle rear.

All of the Schmuckers were taken to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Chancy Schmucker was treated and released June 28 and Davanna Schmucker was released July 5. Another passenger in Schmucker's car, Jeff Sutton, 23, remains a patient at Parkview, where he was listed in fair condition this morning.

Gudakunst, two children in her vehicle and Seibel all were treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital and released the day of the accident.

Information regarding the test results was forwarded to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor's Office for review.

It is standard procedure of the KCSD to test drivers for drug and alcohol use after serious traffic accidents. [[In-content Ad]]
