NAPPANEE - Dr. James C. Miller, 81, of 1725 Juniper Place, 314, Goshen, and formerly of Nappanee, died at 7:15 p.m. May 22, 2007, in his residence.

He was born June 26, 1925, in Nappanee, to J. Carl and E. Mae Rapp Miller. On Sept. 29, 1950, in Nappanee, he married Lois Ellen Metzler, who died Dec. 29, 1980. On Dec. 23, 1982, in Bluffton, he married Carol L. Steckbeck, who survives.

He graduated from Nappanee High School in 1943, and Northern Illinois College of Optometry in May 1949, with a Doctor of Optometry degree. He was an optometrist in Nappanee from 1949 until he retired in 1989. He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1943 to May 1946 with the rank of Pharmacist Mate Second Class. He attended Nappanee United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 154, Nappanee, and Masonic Lodge; a life member of Indiana Optometric Association and American Optometric Association; a former member of Nappanee Chamber of Commerce, Nappanee Junior Chamber of Commerce, Nappanee Noon Kiwanis Club, Elkhart Elks Club, and the 40&8. He received the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award as outstanding Man of the Year in 1956, and was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Otis R. Bowen in 1976.

Also surviving are a son, James C. Miller III, Elkhart; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Dave (Leslie) Noble, Rockwell, Iowa, and Mrs. Ben (Lisa) Raney, Atlanta, Ga.; a stepson, Tad Steckbeck, Bluffton; two granddaughters; and five step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date. There will be cremation.

No calling is planned.
