By Staff Report-

The late Dr. Howard “Doc” Liebengood and his wife Helen established a fund with the Community Foundation of Wabash County in 2007 to provide scholarships to high school seniors living in Kosciusko County who are graduating in the top 20 percent of their senior class.

Dr. Liebengood moved to Silver Lake in 1967 and lived there until his death in July 2008. He operated a veterinary practice that involved preparing and certifying cattle for national and international shipment.

Before moving to Silver Lake, he was a co-founder and charter member of the Michiana Veterinary Association.

Doc and Helen had a desire to give back to the community they loved living in for more than 40 years. In addition to their scholarship fund, they also set up several other funds through the Foundation to give back to their local community, through 4-H, the Kosciusko County Animal Shelter and local churches to provide help to those in need.

To be eligible, students must be pursuing higher education either full or part time from any accredited university or college. Along with an application, students are required to submit a proof of financial need form from the college or university they plan to attend. Students who have previously been awarded the scholarship may reapply each year they are in college after the initial award if they maintain at least a 2.5/4.0 grade point average at the accredited university or college.

Applications for the Dr. Howard and Helen Liebengood Scholarship are available through the Community Foundation of Wabash County’s website www.cfwabash.org and from the student’s guidance counselor. The applications are due to the student’s guidance counselor or to the Community Foundation of Wabash County, 218 E. Main St., North Manchester, by March 16.
