NORTH MANCHESTER - Douglas B. Shenefield, 79, of North Manchester, died at 12:38 a.m. Feb. 27, 2007, in Marion General Hospital.

He was born Sept. 19, 1927, in Huntington, to Burris Brunell and Lula May Grossnickle Shenefield. On March 7, 1953, he married Rozella I. Williams, who died July 20, 1999.

He recapped tires at Kennedy-Lucas, North Manchester, then Wertenberger Tire, Huntington, for 20 years. He worked at Laketon Refinery for 16 years where he loaded tankers and did general maintenance, retiring in 1989. He was a World War II and Korean War U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the SS Karen. He was discharged in 1953. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church. He was a member of Deming Lodge 88 F&AM and Eagles Aerie 4182, both in North Manchester; Mizpah Shrine, Fort Wayne; and a 61-year member and past commander of American Legion 286. He was a life member of Moose Lodge 1518, North Manchester, where he held offices and had his fellowship degree. He earned his life membership by signing up more than 300 people. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, North Manchester, and transferred membership to Warsaw 1126 upon closing of North Manchester VFW.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Shenefield, North Manchester, and William Shenefield, Oklahoma; a daughter, Deborah Smith, North Manchester; a brother, Roger Shenefield, Warsaw; two grandsons, Jeff Wagner, Mentone, and Scott Ervin, a Petty Officer 2nd class in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees stationed in Gulf Port, Miss.; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester.

Calling is from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
