She was born in North Liberty, Pa., to Hiram and Lois VanCleve.
She graduated from Houghton College in 1951, and later received a master's degree from East Tennessee State. She was a teacher in North Carolina, Tennessee and Indiana. Her teaching career lasted 43 years. She was loved by her students and prayed for them, and still had contact with many of them. She remembered special things about each student. In 1995, she moved to the Fredericksburg area and that's when Linda McWhirt became her "adopted daughter" and she took wonderful care of her. In 1997, she became a chaplain with Market Place Ministries and served at McLane Mid-Atlantic for 12 years, retiring December 2009. She spent most of her life serving the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school and small groups in the church and as a chaplain.
Surviving are two brothers, Harold VanCleve, Warsaw, and Donald (and spouse Deanna) VanCleve, Longwood, Fla.; two sisters, Ruth (and spouse Marshall) Griswold, Warsaw, and Lois Strum, Hague, New York and Fredericksburg; six nieces: Terrie Sahagun, Syracuse; Kathy Gast, Claypool; Barb Kiphart, Gena Kendall and Laurie Williamson, all of Warsaw; and Norma Strum, Fredericksburg; two nephews, Tim Strum, New Brighton, Pa., and Rich Strum, Ticonderoga, N.Y.; 12 great-nieces; four great-nephews; a great-great niece; and her McLane Mid-Atlantic family.
