She was born June 28, 1926, in Chicago, to Joseph and Emily Kretschmer Smrt. On April 20, 1944, in Joplin, Mo., she married Lt. Herb Bailey, who passed away in January 1966.
She was a 1943 graduate of Harper High School, Chicago, and in 1968 she graduated from Northern Illinois University. She was an elementary school teacher for 20 years in DeKalb.
She was a member of The Federated Church in Sycamore, Ill., and attended Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and DCRTA.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Penelope (and spouse James) Grogan, Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Herb (and spouse Anne) Bailey Jr., Warsaw, and Scott (and spouse Nina) Bailey, Sycamore, Ill.; four grandchildren: Herb III (and spouse Sarah) Bailey; Heidi (and spouse Gary) Leininger, all of Warsaw; Ian (and spouse Michelle) Bailey, Bloomington; and Hannah Bailey, Austin, Texas; and four great-grandchildren: Mandy Whittaker, Emily Bailey, Josie and Jules Leininger. She also was preceded in death by her mother, Emily Smrt, in December 1982; father, Joseph Smrt, in January 1986; brother-in-law, George Zitek, in March 2006; and her sister, Gladys Zitek, in October 2010.
A memorial service and a celebration of her life will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Chaplain Bryan Benjamin officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
