MENTONE - Doris Eileen Cooper, 80, of 3582 S. Ind. 19, Mentone, died at 8:23 a.m. Jan. 4, 2011, in Bremen Health Care Center.

She was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Etna Green, to Glen and Ethel M. Easterday Snider. On Oct. 15, 1950, in Mentone, she married David L. Cooper, who passed Jan. 31, 2000.

She was the youngest of six children. She graduated from Mentone High School in 1949. She made Mentone her home for most of her adult life, spending time in Michigan as a young mother and U.S. Air Force wife and several warm and wonderful winters in Sebring, Fla., during retirement. She was a secretary and telephone operator in early years. She devoted herself to her family as a stay-at-home wife and mother while her three children were small and again did secretarial work. Later, she joined her husband and in-laws in the family business, Cooper Dept. Store, Mentone. When they closed the store, she ran her own craft and t-shirt business in Rochester. She also managed her own craft shows in the Logansport and Marion malls. When semi-retired, she and her husband delivered vans for Explorer Van, Warsaw, driving to many locations throughout the United States. She was a longtime member of Mentone United Methodist Church and was best known for her sense of humor and her feisty attitude. She loved doing crafts in her spare time and was most fond of being a "snow-bird" in Florida.

Surviving are two daughters, Debra Spencer, Mentone, and Denise (and spouse Ray) Driver, Plymouth; a son, Daniel (and spouse Katherine) Cooper, Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren, David Spencer, Rochester; Dustin Spencer, Warsaw; and Deanna Spencer Wilkins, Fort Wayne; two great-grandchildren, Lathen and Landen Spencer; and two sisters, Mary Thomas, South Bend, and Kate Whetstone, Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold and Hollis Snider; and a sister, Wylon Bowers.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with the Rev. Amber Karkosky-Litten officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
