Garry Trudeau in his March 3 Doonesbury cartoon strip reached a new despicable low.
The middle two frames contained the following statements: "What do you expect - they're Kurds! You can't rely on them for anything! Even if they do show, they don't know Baghdad! And they don't speak Arabic! Trust me, these people are basically sub-human!"
The Kurds, living in northern Iraq, have provided the only success element in the Iraqi story. They have established their own state where peace and stability have become a daily experience. At the cost of many hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Kurds expressed their gratitude to the American people through their messages, which were shown on Fox News channel, and maybe others as well. They rank with the Israelis as America's best friends. It was reprehensible for Trudeau to describe these freedom-loving Kurds as he did.
