He was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Clinton, Ill., to Lewis and Edna Allen. In 1949, he married Imogene Kennedy. In May 1983, he married Dorothy Arlene Bickham, who died in 2009.
He retired from Federal Mogul on March 1, 1996. Three years later, he and Arlene attended his 50th high school reunion after which he was heard to remark, “Everybody ELSE looked old!” In his retirement years, he enjoyed camping in Indiana state parks with Arlene, visiting Colorado (with the exception of driving up Pike’s Peak), and watching DVDs at home with Arlene’s grandson, Gavin. He was quite an accomplished carpenter building all sorts of things, including birdhouses, and performing home projects and repairs. As a third-generation Chicago Cubs fan, he enjoyed talking with Rochester friend, Alberta Colty, about the Cubs’ most recent game.
Surviving are three children: Rex (and spouse Roberta) Muncie; Mark (and spouse Teresa), Alexandria, Va.; and Lynn Buttz, Warsaw; a sister, Marjorie Reinhold, Decatur, Ill.; an aunt, Sylvia Kemp, Clinton, Ill.; four grandchildren, Shanna, Carrie, Christopher and Keith; and five great-grandchildren, Teryn, Claudia, Lizzie, Jesson and Draven.
He truly considered Arlene’s family to be part of his, and is also survived by her daughters: Donna (and spouse Barry) Frisinger and Kelly (and spouse Ben) Woodcox, all of Rochester; Susie Austgen-Fogarty, Griffith; and a son, Donald (and spouse Glenda) Austgen, Hessville; 11 grandchildren: Karli, Gavin, Camden, Hallie, Ryan, Justin, Devin, Brooke, Melissa, Steve, Jennifer; nine great-grandchildren: Paige, Haleigh, Khalin, K.J., Rilley, Colin, Laney, Stevie and Angelica; and a sister-in-law, Sharon (and spouse Jimmy) Thomas.
Over the years, he and Arlene adopted various stray animals including cats Bodacious, Ginger, Muffy, Buddy, and Bo-Kitty; and dogs, Annie and Barney, all of which are now reunited.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Faith Outreach Center, 1125 E. 9th St., Rochester. Burial will follow the service at the Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery on Bruce Lake.
Calling will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the center.
Arrangements are being handled by Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.
