He was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Warsaw, to Charles and Carla Muscroft Butler. On June 24, 1944, in Warsaw, he married Dora M. Ruse, who survives.
He was a wood pattern maker for many area shops for many years retiring at the age of 62. He then became a real estate agent working both in Indiana and Michigan. He was a 50-year member of Presbyterian Church, Edwardsburg, and the Pattern Makers League. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviator from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1944. He was a member of American Legion Post 354, Edwardsburg. He enjoyed fly fishing, going to auctions and collecting many things including antique toys. He could build just about anything he put his mind and hands to. He and his wife resided on Garver Lake for 27 years and have many wonderful memories with family and friends there.
Also surviving are a son, David (and spouse Paula) Butler, Lake Michigan; a daughter, Deedee (and spouse Daniel) Guss, Lambertville, Mich.; two grandchildren, Monty Langwell and Robert Jr. (and spouse Jamie) Langwell, all of Elkhart; and a great-grandchild, Ani Langwell. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Butler, and a sister, Charlotte Butler.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Church, Edwardsburg, with the Rev. Scott P. Scheel officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. A graveside service and burial with military honors by members of the U.S. Navy Burial Detail and American Legion Post 49, Warsaw, will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
