Dome Day Massacre

By Jason Knavel, Times-Union Staff Writer-

INDIANAPOLIS - The Northern Lakes Conference Day at the Dome turned into a shoot-out affair, with three lopsided victories and one game that came down to the wire.

Plymouth opened the day with a 42-0 win over Northridge, and that was followed by a 37-7 Concord win over Wawasee. The third game of the day was another blowout as Goshen handled NorthWood surprisingly easy with a 30-7 win. Finally, the last game of the day saw South Bend St. Joe escape the Dome with a hard-fought 31-23 win over the Warsaw Tigers.

South Bend St. Joe 31

Warsaw 23

Turnovers can be heartbreaking. The Warsaw Tigers understand that ever-so-much-more now. The Tigers had two costly first half turnovers and another major mistake that gave South Bend St. Joe easy opportunities to score at the RCA Dome Saturday.

Even though Warsaw fought back from a big hole, the Indians were just given too many chances and won 31-23.

"You can't give a good ball club a short field to operate their offense on," Warsaw head coach Phil Jensen said. "We didn't give them 19 points, but we surely gave them all the opportunities to get 19 points. It's not the defense's fault. It's mistakes and penalties."

Warsaw took the opening kick-off but fumbled it away at the 14-yard line. Two plays later St. Joe quarterback Brian Lawler scored the first of his four touchdowns to give his squad a 6-0 victory just 47 seconds into the game.

On Warsaw's next drive, the Tigers looked like they were beginning to move the ball after a first down. However, Warsaw was forced to punt on a fourth-and-18, but the snap was mishandled. St. Joe took over at the Warsaw 20.

Lawler finished that drive with a one-yard plunge that put the Indians ahead 12-0 less than halfway through the first period.

At that point, Warsaw looked to be in a lot of trouble against a very solid St. Joe team, but the Tigers never gave up.

"I'm proud of them because they didn't quit," Jensen said. "They fought at it and they kept trying. It just goes back to the fact that you can't keep shooting yourself in the foot and overcome it, especially against a good ball club."

Warsaw cut the lead in half when Jose Esquivel scampered 74 yards with a number of nifty cut-backs to make the score 12-6 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter.

The defenses began to settle down after that point. Warsaw had to settle for a 33-yard Brad Waggoner field goal early in the second quarter to make the score 12-9.

After a St. Joe punt, Warsaw got the ball back, but Esquivel fumbled the ball away, and the Indians started another drive inside the Tiger 20-yard line at the 15. After a 12-yard run by John Lutes, Lawler scored his third touchdown to make the score 19-9.

Warsaw quarterback Greg Seiss threw an interception on the Tigers' next drive as St. Joe regained possession at the Warsaw 47.

However, the Indians could not move the ball and were forced to punt with 3:37 left in the half. The Tigers began a 74-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run from Mike Moore with 21 seconds left to make the score 19-16 at the break.

After a St. Joe drive that lasted more than five minutes to start the third quarter and ended in a 30-yard field goal, the Tigers took over and began a long drive of their own.

Warsaw moved the ball 74 yards on 13 plays and finally scored when Seiss hooked up with Ross Kesler for a 23-yard touchdown, one of Kesler's six receptions on the day. The extra point gave the Tigers their first lead of the game at 23-22.

But in the fourth quarter, the defense lost a step. St. Joe answered Warsaw's touchdown with another Lawler quarterback keeper that was set up by a 48-yard pass that put the ball down to the 12-yard line.

St. Joe missed the two-point conversion but came back on the next drive with a 27-yard field goal to make the score 31-23 with 4:25 left.

The Tigers had one last chance after starting at their own 35. Seiss and Kesler hooked up twice to get to the St. Joe 29-yard line. A Seiss-to-Jason Barrett pass gave the Tigers a first down at the Indians 13. However, St. Joe linebacker Jimmy Kobyra intercepted a tipped pass with just a minute to play to clinch to win for the Indians.

"The kids haven't learned to go hard, every day, every drill, doing everything involved with Tiger football the right way," Jensen said. "Until they learn or are willing to do that, things like this are going continue to happen to us. It just comes from that lack of self-discipline."

Warsaw (2-2, 0-2) will host Northridge Friday.

Concord 37, Wawasee 7

Often times the kicking game is overlooked as an important part of a football game. But Saturday at the RCA Dome, Concord showed just how important a great one can be in a 37-7 win over Wawasee.

Of the six times the Warriors set up to return kick-offs, four times the Warriors had to begin at the 20-yard line after the Minutemen kicked the ball into the end zone. Wawasee struggled to move the ball from that far back, and Concord consistently got good field position near midfield after Warrior punts.

"It definitely was a game of field position," Wawasee head coach Joe Rietveld said. "Anytime you give up good field position, you're putting yourself in a bigger hole than you need to be."

Despite Concord's overwhelming domination for the first 20 minutes, the Warriors found themselves in just a 10-0 deficit with more than four minutes left in the second quarter and they began a 74-yard drive.

Andy Brown and Jeremy High connected for a 21-yard pass to get the offense rolling. Brown then kept the ball himself for a 28-yard scamper to the 10-yard line and he eventually got a touchdown on a fourth-and-goal 5-yard race to the corner of the end zone. High's extra point made the score 10-7 with just 1:43 left in the half.

But that's when the Wawasee defense, which had played a solid bend-but-don't-break game up to that point, broke. Concord had a nine-play drive that culminated in a 2-yard touchdown run from Ricky McKenzie that made the score 17-7 at the half and took all the wind out of the Wawasee sails.

"That was probably the turning point," Rietveld said. "If we could have gone into the half with the momentum on our side, it would have definitely been advantageous. We knew if we could get them on their heels, we would have a chance in the fourth quarter."

Concord put the game away in the third quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds left that made the score 24-7 and then had two more touchdowns in the fourth, one on a 28-yard interception return.

Rustin Mikel, after his 332-yard outburst in week one, has been bruised and battered. He had just nine yards rushing on 13 carries against Concord. Overall, the Minutemen outgained Wawasee 424 yards to 134.

Wawasee (1-3, 0-2) will host NorthWood Friday.

Goshen 30, NorthWood 7

If the Goshen-NorthWood matchup, which was billed by some as the game that would decide the Northern Lakes Conference champion, was any indication, Goshen may be able to run undefeated through the conference for the second consecutive year.

The Redskins came up with big play after big play in defeating the Panthers at the RCA Dome Saturday 30-7.

For most of the first half, the game was a hard-hitting affair with a big-game atmosphere. But Goshen deflated the Panther hopes with three first-half touchdowns from at least 40 yards out.

Mason Ogle scored on a 65-yard burst in the opening period to put the Redskins ahead 7-0.

The Panthers looked like they would answer on their next possession, but Charlie Roeder was intercepted in the end zone to end the drive.

Goshen came back with 45- and 40-yard touchdown receptions from Phil Mikel and Ogle to make the score 20-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Redskins put the game away with another touchdown as Andy Yoder threw his third touchdown pass of the game.

Despite the lopsided score, NorthWood actually had 17 first downs compared to just seven for Goshen. However, three turnovers cost the Panthers and those big plays were very costly.

"Our defense didn't play that poorly except for a few big plays," NorthWood head coach Rich Dodson said. Dodson, who was frustrated with his team's play, simplified the problem. "They just ran passed us, threw the ball down the field, then caught it and they scored. I know Goshen's not 30 to 7 better than us."

NorthWood (2-2, 1-1) will head to Wawasee Friday for another Northern Lakes Conference matchup.
