Expired pharmaceutical drugs will be collected by the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District, beginning Monday, at various locations.

"Unused or expired drugs are a threat to children, animals and the elderly," said Sue Studebaker, executive director of the district. "When flushed down the drain or burned, they can release toxic chemicals into the ground water or air. Drugs can be scavenged from the trash and illegally sold within the community."

A federally certified hazardous waste disposal company will incinerate the drugs. Controlled substances will be collected by a Kosciusko County sheriff's deputy at the same time and kept secure until the HHW company picks the items up.

The collection includes all expired medicines, all unused medicines, medicines that should have been refrigerated and weren't, unsealed syrups or eye drops, unsealed tubes of creams and ointments and medical sharps.

Times of collection are: May 12 - Silver Lake Senior Center 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; May 13 - Pierceton Senior Center, Pete Thorn Center and Grace Village, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; May 14 - Winona Lake Senior Center and North Webster Senior Center, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; May 15 - Colfax Place, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Retired Tigers, noon to 1 p.m., and Milford Senior Center, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; May 15 - Syracuse Senior Center and Mentone Senior Center, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and May 17 - KC Recycling Depot 11 a.m. tp 1 p.m..
