The restaurant at 1980 N. Detroit St. reopened Sunday following a May 26 break-in that also hit two neighboring restaurants and a gas station. Owner Bill Aguilar, who also owns the Arby’s in Lake Village Shopping Center, said the location was closed for about two weeks for repairs and equipment replacement.
Aguilar didn’t have an estimate of damage, but he noted the burglars took a sledgehammer to the registers as well as attempting to break into the office safe and wrecking the frier, meat slicer, coffee pots and music system. He said he recently received replacement registers but hasn’t yet seen the bill, though he does expect insurance will pay for them.
He also expressed appreciation for the community’s support.
“People said how terrible it was. I’m just glad to be open,” he said.
The only damage to the Penguin Point at 408 N. Detroit St. was a broken window, which is expected to be replaced soon. The restaurant was not closed after the break-in.
Attempts to contact the Subway at 222 N. Detroit St. and the Mobil Mart at 443 N. Detroit St. were unsuccessful at press time.
Nicholas L. Cline, 24, Mishawaka, and Jason A. Whetstone, 29, South Bend, were arrested for the break-ins after a Warsaw parks employee saw a vehicle leaving the scene.[[In-content Ad]]
